Naming your fingers in Thai

A fun and surprisingly useful set of words: the fingers. The general word for finger is niu (นิ้ว), and from there each finger gets its own name built around it.

The thumb, the pointing finger, the middle one and the rest all have their own Thai labels, so learning them teaches you a tidy little group of vocabulary in one go. It is the kind of playful topic that sticks in your memory.

It also comes in handy more often than you would think, from counting to pointing things out. This short Thai reel runs through the fingers in Thai so you can name them all like a local.
