What Thai People Say Instead of Ouch

The Thai version of ouch

In English we say ouch. In Thai the natural sound of pain is oy (โอ๊ย), a sharp little cry that slips out when you stub a toe or touch something hot. You will hear it everywhere once you know it.

It is one of those sounds that instantly makes you sound more local. Say oy instead of ouch when you bump into something in Phuket and the Thai people around you will smile, because it is exactly what they would say.

There are stronger and softer versions depending on how much it hurt, but oy is the everyday one to start with. This short Thai reel shows how it is used so you can react like a local the next time something pinches.
