Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town is the island's cultural heart: pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, indie cafés and street art, heritage Baba cuisine and the buzzing Sunday Walking Street. This is Phuket beyond the beach.

Best of Old Town by category

Set inland on the east side of the island, Phuket Old Town (part of Phuket Town) is the island's most characterful district and the antidote to its resort strips. Rows of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses line Thalang, Dibuk and Krabi Roads, a legacy of the tin-mining boom that made Phuket rich in the 19th century.

The vibe and who it suits

Old Town suits culture-seekers, photographers, foodies and anyone wanting a break from the sand. It's walkable, atmospheric and full of independent character, boutique guesthouses, specialty coffee shops, art galleries, cocktail bars and heritage restaurants. Many visitors do it as a day trip, but staying a night lets you enjoy the quieter early mornings and evenings.

What it's known for

The architecture is the headline draw, best appreciated on a slow wander with a camera. The area is also known for street art murals tucked down its lanes, for Phuket-Chinese (Baba/Peranakan) heritage food you won't find on the beaches, and for the Sunday Walking Street (Lard Yai) on Thalang Road, when the centre becomes a lively market of food stalls, crafts and music. It's also the setting for the annual Vegetarian Festival.

What you'll find here

Old Town is a highlight of our Phuket attractions coverage, and its café scene is among the island's best. Browse local restaurants, characterful boutique hotels, and evening nightlife in the form of speakeasy-style cocktail bars. It's also a natural add-on to island and cultural tours.

Getting around

The historic core is compact and best explored on foot. There's no beach here, the nearest west-coast sand is a 20 to 30 minute drive away, so pair Old Town with a beach stay elsewhere, or use it as a quieter, cheaper, more local base. The airport is around 30 to 40 minutes to the north. As the island's main town, it's also the best-connected hub for onward transport, with regular local buses and ride-hailing coverage. Old Town is a rewarding visit year-round, since its appeal is indoors and undercover as much as out; the Sunday Walking Street runs whatever the season, though the October Vegetarian Festival is its liveliest, and loudest, week.
