The island's beaches line the Andaman-facing west coast, each with a distinct character and crowd. Knowing which is which saves you a wasted taxi ride, because they range from party-loud to blissfully empty within a short drive. Browse the beach listings or open the directory to explore by area.
The main beaches
Patong is the loud, lively one — 3km of sand backed by every facility, watersports and nightlife. Kata and Karon are the family favourites: wide, clean sand with gentle slopes, good swimming and food nearby, plus beginner surf at Kata in the green season. For a smarter, calmer scene head to upscale Surin and Bang Tao, where beach clubs line a long, quieter shore. Kamala is relaxed and low-key, while the south — Nai Harn, Ya Nui and the postcard-perfect, harder-to-reach Freedom and Kata Noi — delivers the clearest water and prettiest scenery.
Safety and swimming
The sea is at its clearest and calmest in high season (November to April). During the green season (May to October) the west-facing beaches can develop powerful rip currents — always obey the coloured warning flags, and never swim past a red flag, which signals dangerous conditions. Drownings happen every year when people ignore them. Watch for jet-skis operating close to shore, and keep an eye on your belongings on the busier beaches.
What to bring and when to go
Sun loungers and umbrellas are rentable on most developed beaches (around 100–200 THB), and many have a designated free-to-sit zone. Mornings are calmest and quietest; late afternoon brings the west-coast sunsets Phuket is famous for. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and reserve valuables at your hotel — the sun here is stronger than it feels in the sea breeze.
Beyond the west coast
The quieter east and north (Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon) trade nightlife for space and nature, and Mai Khao is a sea-turtle nesting beach.
