Phuket has one of Asia's deepest ranges of places to stay, and the right area matters more than the star rating. The west coast holds the beaches and the big-name resorts; the south is quieter and popular with long-stayers; and inland Old Town offers characterful boutique hotels. Choosing your area
Patong is the convenient, everything-on-your-doorstep choice — great for first-timers and nightlife, busiest and least peaceful. Kata and Karon are the family sweet spot: proper beaches, plenty of mid-range hotels, calmer than Patong. For luxury and space, Bang Tao (home to the Laguna complex) and upscale, leafy Surin lead the way, with Kamala a quieter, increasingly smart alternative. Down south, Rawai and Nai Harn suit longer, more local stays, while Phuket Old Town gives you heritage boutique hotels away from the sand.
Getting around from your base
Phuket is bigger than most first-timers expect, and public transport is limited, so factor in travel time. Patong to the airport is around 45–60 minutes; the southern beaches are 20–40 minutes from Patong. Many visitors rent a scooter or car, or lean on ride-hailing apps and hotel transfers. If you want to walk to the beach, restaurants and bars, pick a beachfront base rather than a hillside villa that needs a drive for everything.
Seasons and pricing
Rates swing sharply with the season. The green season (roughly May to October) brings the lowest prices and quieter beaches, at the cost of some rain. High season runs December to February — dry, cool and busiest, with rooms often booked out and priced at their peak. Book well ahead for Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
Price feel
Phuket spans every budget: clean guesthouse rooms from under 1,000 THB a night, comfortable mid-range hotels around 2,000–4,500 THB, and five-star beachfront resorts and pool villas running many times that.
