The must-sees

The 45-metre marble Big Buddha crowns the hills above Chalong and looks out over the whole south of the island — free to enter, and best in the cooler morning. Nearby Wat Chalong is Phuket's largest and most revered temple, a working Buddhist site worth visiting respectfully. Phuket Old Town is a landmark in itself: pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art, small museums and the Sunday Walking Street market, all best explored slowly on foot. At the island's southern tip, Promthep Cape is the classic sunset viewpoint, close to Rawai and Nai Harn.

Viewpoints, temples and nature

The west-coast viewpoints — Karon, Windmill and the Kata–Nai Harn ridge — catch spectacular late-afternoon light over the beaches near Kata and Patong. Beyond the headline sights, look for the colourful Chinese shrines, the aquarium at Cape Panwa, and the elephant and gibbon rehabilitation projects in the interior. Practical tips

Dress respectfully at temples and the Big Buddha — cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering buildings; sarongs are usually available to borrow at the entrance. Time viewpoints for late afternoon to beat the heat and catch sunset, but arrive early at Promthep as it fills up fast. Most temples are free, with donations welcome, while a few attractions charge modest entry.
