Rawai, Phuket

Rawai is where much of Phuket actually lives: a laid-back southern town built around fresh seafood, a sea-gypsy heritage, and a thriving expat, wellness and long-stay community rather than a swimming beach.

Best of Rawai by category

Rawai occupies the island's southern tip, and it feels different from the resort coast, more lived-in, more local, and more geared to people who stay for months than for a week. It's the base of choice for many of Phuket's expats and digital nomads.

The vibe and who it suits

Rawai suits long-stayers, remote workers, wellness travellers and anyone who wants an authentic, community feel over polished tourism. The scene is built around cafés, gyms, yoga studios, Muay Thai camps and an international spread of restaurants. It's affordable, friendly and refreshingly unpretentious.

What it's known for

Rawai's headline draw is seafood: the Rawai seafood market and pier let you pick fresh catch and have nearby restaurants cook it to order. The area also has a historic Sea Gypsy (Chao Leh) village, a reminder of the island's oldest community, and its piers are the departure point for boats to Coral Island, Racha and other nearby islands, making it a natural tours hub.

The beaches

Rawai itself is not really a swimming beach, its shallow, boat-lined shore is better for seafood and sunsets than bathing. For swimming, the beautiful Nai Harn beach and little Ya Nui are both a short drive away. See our Phuket beaches guide for details.

What you'll find here

Expect long-stay apartments and villas alongside guesthouses, so browse our hotels for options. Rawai is a leading hub for wellness, fitness and yoga, and its nightlife is relaxed, bars, live music and beachfront dining rather than clubs.

Getting around

A scooter is close to essential here, as the area is spread out and taxis can be scarce; ride-hailing apps help. Nai Harn, Chalong and Promthep Cape are all within easy reach, and the airport is around 50 to 60 minutes to the north. Because so many residents stay for months, monthly scooter and apartment rates are common and represent good value. The green season brings rain and a slower pace but rarely empties Rawai the way it quietens the tourist beaches, since much of its community lives here year-round; high season simply adds more visitors and warmer, drier weather.
