The crisp, rolled Thai R

Thai has a rolled or trilled R, written with the letter ror ruea (ร), and it is a delight once you notice it. In careful or formal speech it comes out crisp and rolling, quite different from the soft English R.

In fast everyday speech many Thai people soften it, and it can even slide toward an L sound, which is why you hear so much variety. But when someone leans into the full rolled R, it sounds polished and precise.

Playing with this sound is a fun way to sharpen your pronunciation. This short Thai reel shows off the rolled Thai R so you can hear it clearly and have a go yourself.
