Best of Patong by category
Patong is the beating heart of tourist Phuket, a compact grid of hotels, malls, massage shops and bars packed behind a 3km curve of sand on the island's west coast. Nowhere else on the island offers this much choice within walking distance, and nowhere else is quite this loud.
The vibe and who it suits
Patong runs on energy. It suits first-time visitors, groups of friends, and anyone who wants nightlife, dining and shopping without needing a scooter or taxi to reach them. Bangla Road is the famous after-dark strip, all neon, live music and go-go bars, while by day the same streets are given over to street food, tailors and pharmacies. Families are perfectly comfortable here during daylight, but many with young children prefer to sleep in quieter Kata or Karon and visit Patong for the buzz.
The beach
Patong Beach is long, sandy and stacked with facilities, sun loungers, watersports, and endless refreshment. It is livelier and less pristine than the southern bays, and in the green season (roughly May to October) the west-facing surf can produce dangerous rip currents, so always respect the flags. See our full guide to Phuket beaches for calmer alternatives.
What you'll find here
Dining spans everything from cheap Thai canteens to international restaurants, rooftop lounges and beachfront seafood. Jungceylon and other malls cover shopping and cinemas, and the town has the island's densest cluster of hotels at every price point. For a night out, our nightlife section covers Patong's bars and clubs; for daytime escapes, browse island-hopping tours.
Getting around
Most of Patong is walkable, though the hillside hotels involve steep climbs. Taxis, tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps fill the gaps, and scooter hire is everywhere, if you're confident in busy traffic. The airport is around 45 to 60 minutes by road to the north, and the coastal roads south to Karon and north to Kamala are quick day-trip hops. High season runs November to February, when the beach and Bangla Road are at their busiest and hotel rates peak; the green season brings quieter streets, lower prices and the occasional heavy downpour.
