Overview
Freedom Beach is the one that turns up on every list of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket, and unusually the reputation is deserved. It is a 300 metre curve of very white sand in a cove south of Patong, hemmed in by steep jungle hills at both ends, with water that is noticeably clearer than the beaches you can drive to. There is no road down to it, which is exactly why it looks the way it does.
Getting there is the whole story. There are two ways in, and both cost money. A longtail boat from Patong runs to the beach and back for somewhere in the region of 1,200 to 1,500 baht for the round trip, usually shared between however many people are in the boat. The alternative is to come overland and walk down a steep private trail through the trees from the road above, which carries a fee of around 100 baht per person, while general beach access has been charged at around 200 baht.
Prices and arrangements on this beach have changed repeatedly over the years, so treat every figure here as an indication to confirm on the day rather than a fixed rate.
What to expect on the sand
Facilities are basic but present, which surprises people expecting nothing: there is a small restaurant and drinks available, some sunbed and umbrella hire, and rudimentary toilet provision. It is not Paradise Beach and it is not trying to be.
The beach itself is the reason to come. Fine white sand, a steep green backdrop, and clear water over a sandy bottom in the middle of the cove with rock and reef at both ends. Snorkelling at either end is worthwhile when the sea is calm, and the water clarity in high season is among the best on this side of the island.
Because access is limited, the crowd is limited too, though "limited" in high season still means a healthy number of boats arriving through the morning. Come early if you want the cove closer to empty, and note that the last boats back leave in the late afternoon, so this is a day trip rather than a sunset spot unless you have arranged a pickup.
Swimming, snorkelling and safety
In high season, November to April, Freedom is an excellent swimming and snorkelling beach: sheltered, clear and gently shelving in the middle.
In the green season, May to October, it is a different proposition. The cove is exposed to monsoon swell, the boat trip across from Patong becomes uncomfortable or stops altogether, and the jungle trail down gets slippery and genuinely dangerous in the wet. Lifeguard cover is minimal to non existent. If you are visiting in those months, check whether boats are even running before planning the day.
Keep to the sandy middle of the cove for swimming and be careful around the rocks at both ends whenever there is any swell. Our guide to the best time to visit Phuket sets out the seasons.
Location and getting there
Freedom Beach is on the coast south of Patong, beyond Paradise Beach and Tri Trang Beach, reachable only by boat or on foot down the trail from the road above.
Longtails leave from the southern end of Patong Beach. Agree the price, confirm how many people the fare covers and fix a pickup time before you get in, because there is no way to walk home along the coast. If you take the overland route, drive or ride to the trailhead on the road above, pay the trail fee and allow time for a steep descent and a much harder climb back up in the afternoon heat.
Good to know
Budget for access. Between the boat or trail fee and the beach charge, Freedom is one of the few beaches in Phuket where a day out has a real cost attached, and the amounts change.
Go early, go in high season, and take water. Bring a mask if you snorkel. Sunscreen and shade matter because the cove faces west and there is limited natural cover on the sand. For beautiful beaches you can simply park at, see our Phuket beaches page, and if a pool with service is closer to what you want, our day passes page lists resorts selling access.
