Ao Sane Beach

Ao Sane Beach, Beaches in Nai Harn, Phuket

Overview

Ao Sane is not really a sandy beach at all, and that is the key to it. It is a series of small rocky coves tucked around the headland from the western end of Nai Harn Beach, where the shoreline is boulder and reef with only patches of sand between, and the reason people make the trip is what is under the water rather than what is on top of it.

It is the best shore snorkelling on Phuket, or close to it. The reef starts almost immediately off the rocks, the water is usually clearer here than in the open bays, and the fish life is noticeably better than anywhere you can walk into from a wide sandy beach. Divers and snorkellers dominate the small crowd, and it stays quiet because there is no beach in the conventional sense to attract anyone else.

There is a small amount of low key development along the access track, a couple of places to eat and drink, and a resort at the far end. Otherwise it is rocks, trees and water.

What to expect on the sand

Manage your expectations about the sand, because there is not much of it. The coves are small, the shoreline is rocky, and at high tide the usable space shrinks to very little. This is a place to arrive with reef shoes, get in the water, and sit on a rock or at a table rather than lay out a towel for the afternoon.

There is basic provision: a couple of small beachside restaurants and bars, some sun loungers on the patches of sand, and snorkel gear available in season. There is no lifeguard, no public toilet block and no infrastructure beyond what those small businesses provide.

Entry to the shoreline is free, though the track in is narrow and the parking informal.

Snorkelling, swimming and safety

Snorkelling is the whole point. High season, November to April, is when the water is clear and calm enough to make it worthwhile, and the reef immediately off the rocks is shallow enough to see well and extensive enough to be interesting. Bring your own mask and fins if you have them, and wear reef shoes because getting in and out is over rock.

Swimming, in the sense of a lap up and down a sandy beach, is not what Ao Sane offers. The bottom is rocky, the entry points are awkward, and there is reef close in.

The green season, May to October, is largely off. Monsoon swell over a rocky shoreline with no lifeguard is a bad combination, visibility drops, and the access track is less pleasant in the wet. If you want to snorkel Phuket, come between December and April.

Our guide to the best time to visit Phuket sets out what each month looks like.

Location and getting there

Ao Sane is on the far southwest of the island, reached by a narrow track running west from the end of Nai Harn Beach around the headland, about 18 kilometres from Phuket Town and roughly an hour from the airport.

The track is single lane in places, unsealed in parts and has a couple of steep pinches, which is fine on a scooter and manageable in a car driven carefully. Parking is informal and limited. There is no public transport, so a scooter, taxi or app based ride is the only realistic way in, and it is a straightforward add on to a day at Nai Harn.

A note on which cove you end up at, because Ao Sane is not one beach but several. The track passes a sequence of small rocky inlets before it ends, and each has slightly different access to the water. The first ones you reach are the easiest to get into and the busiest. Keep going to the far end and the entries get more awkward over rock but the snorkelling improves and you will often have a cove to yourself.

Good to know

Reef shoes are close to essential, and a mask makes the trip worthwhile rather than merely scenic.

Combine it with Nai Harn Beach next door, which has the sand, the lagoon and the facilities that Ao Sane does not. Go in the morning for the calmest water and the best light. Take your rubbish with you and do not stand on the coral. Every other beach on the island, including all the sandy ones, is on our Phuket beaches page.
