The Kata Loop to Big Buddha is a short, punchy jungle-and-plantation loop that climbs from the Kata hillside up toward the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill, in southern Phuket. It is a real, GPS-recorded 4.9 km circuit with about 304 m of climbing, threading through rubber plantations on the kind of dirt tracks the local quad and off-road crowd already ride. That makes it a natural short Kata to Big Buddha enduro spin, and an easy one to walk too.

Quad country. The recorder went looking for a line through the rubber plantations because there are more and more quads in this area. It is a genuine off-road spot, so ride considerately, keep your speed sensible near the plantations, and watch for other vehicles.

Riding and hiking it

The loop is graded moderate.

  • For enduro riders, it is a quick, fun loop of dirt and plantation tracks with a short sharp climb toward Big Buddha, ideal when you want a ride without committing to a big day.
  • For hikers, it is a compact forest walk with a hill-country feel close to Kata.

The route and terrain

The loop starts on the Kata hillside and climbs through rubber plantations and dirt tracks toward the hills below Big Buddha before looping back. It reaches the hillside near the monument rather than the temple entrance, so pair it with a road visit to Big Buddha itself. Use the elevation profile above to see the short, sharp climb.

Best time to go

  • November to June (drier months): the best grip on the dirt and plantation tracks.
  • After heavy rain: the tracks get slick, so wait for it to dry.

Start early, carry water, and check the live rain radar and forecast further down this page before you set out. Because this is working plantation land shared with quads, keep your speed down near the rows, close any gates you open, and give walkers and other riders plenty of room.

Getting to the trailhead

The loop starts on the Kata hillside on the way up toward Big Buddha. From Kata Beach it is about 10 minutes by scooter, and from Chalong roughly 15 minutes. Follow the GPS track, as the plantation tracks are unmarked.
