Festivals and culture
The month's cultural highlight is the Por Tor Festival, also called the Hungry Ghost Festival, which runs from 19 August to 6 September 2026 with its main ceremonial day around 27 August. This is a Hokkien Chinese tradition centred on the shrines of Phuket Old Town, where families lay out offerings for wandering spirits, most famously the bright red turtle shaped cakes that give the festival its look. It is free to watch, deeply photogenic, and a window into the Chinese heritage that shaped modern Phuket. Go in the evening, dress respectfully at the shrines, and let the ceremonies come to you.
August also brings a national public holiday. Thai Mother's Day falls on 12 August 2026, so expect some government offices and banks to close and a calmer, family focused mood across the island that day. It is worth planning any admin or bank visits around it.
Live music and nightlife
Patong turns up the volume in August. The headline booking is Offset, live at Sugar Club on Bangla Road on 12 August. One third of the Atlanta trio Migos, Offset brings a marquee hip-hop name to an intimate club setting, with tickets sold through the venue's official Megatix partner and a strict 20 plus door.
Four nights earlier, the huge Illuzion superclub hosts a back to back weekend of house and techno. Defected takes over on 7 August with Danny Howard and Offaiah, then London selector Joe Rolét plays a deeper house and techno set on 8 August with entry from just 500 baht.
Over on the west coast, Cafe del Mar Phuket in Kamala runs its usual strong summer series of poolside sets. August dates include Darren Emerson on the 1st, Robbie Akbal on the 7th, Joe Gradante and Lazykay on the 8th, CHAMBORD on the 14th, SOMMA on the 21st and TRIKK on the 29th. If you prefer sunset by the sea to a late club night, this is the one to book.
Sport, the outdoors and family days
The month opens on a playful note with HIDOGS Phuket 2026 at Laguna Phuket on 1 August, billed as Thailand's first beach human and dog obstacle challenge. Owners and their dogs tackle a course on the sand together, with veterinary teams on hand and a slice of the proceeds going to marine conservation. It is a family friendly, feel good way to start the month.
At the other end of August, early risers can join Run for the Reef on 29 August, a roughly 3 kilometre sunrise fun run on Bang Tao Beach at Arinara Bangtao Beach Resort. The field is capped at around 200 runners, the pace is relaxed enough for walkers, and part of the entry fee supports the Oceans For All Foundation and its coral, seagrass and coastal cleanup work. Finishers get a healthy breakfast and a few local perks to round off the morning.
Classical music
For a quieter night out, the Phuket School of Music hosts a piano recital by Japanese virtuoso Miyuji Kaneko on 29 August. Themed around the great Romantics from Chopin to Liszt, the concert takes place in the school's intimate 70 seat studio just outside Phuket Town, so every seat is close to the piano. Tickets run from 800 baht for students up to 1,500 baht, and seating is limited, so book ahead.
Markets and nightlife strips worth knowing
Beyond the dated events, Phuket's regular haunts run all month. The Sunday Walking Street market, known locally as Lard Yai, fills Thalang Road in Old Town every Sunday evening with street food, crafts and live music. The Chillva Market, a shipping container night market, is open most evenings and is busiest from Thursday to Saturday. And in Patong, Bangla Road comes alive nightly with beer bars, live music and clubs. None of these need a ticket, so they are easy to fold into any trip.
Looking for people to go with? Join the event group chat
Here is something a normal events listing cannot do. Every event on Thailand Stuff has its own group chat built in. If you are travelling solo, new to the island, or just want a bigger crew for a night out, open the event page and tap Join event chat, then set your RSVP to going or maybe. You will land in a group with everyone else planning to be there, so you can sort out meeting points, share tickets and find people to party or explore with before you even arrive.
It works for all of the events above. Want a crew for Offset on Bangla Road, a running buddy for Run for the Reef, or company at the Por Tor shrines? Join that event's chat and say hello. It is the easiest way to turn a listing into an actual night out with new people.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best events in Phuket in August 2026?
The standouts are the Por Tor Hungry Ghost Festival in Old Town from 19 August, Offset performing live at Sugar Club on 12 August, the Defected and Joe Rolét club nights at Illuzion on 7 and 8 August, the Cafe del Mar DJ series in Kamala, and two outdoor events on 29 August, Run for the Reef and a piano recital at Phuket School of Music.
Is August a good time to visit Phuket?
August is green season, so expect some rain, usually in short heavy bursts rather than all day. The upside is fewer crowds, lower prices and a lush, quiet island, plus one of the busier events calendars of the year. Bring a light rain jacket and keep plans flexible.
Are there any festivals in Phuket in August 2026?
Yes. The main one is the Por Tor Festival, also called the Hungry Ghost Festival, which runs from 19 August to 6 September 2026 and centres on the Chinese shrines of Phuket Old Town, with red turtle cakes and spirit offerings. It is free to watch.
Is there a public holiday in Phuket in August?
Thai Mother's Day falls on 12 August 2026, marking the birthday of the late Queen Sirikit. It is a national public holiday, so some banks and government offices close and the mood across the island is quieter and more family focused that day.
How can I find people to go to an event with?
Every event on Thailand Stuff has its own group chat. Open the event you want to attend, tap Join event chat and set your RSVP, and you can meet others who are going, arrange to meet up and make plans together before the day.
