Overview
The Vihara Sanctuary day pass is one of the simplest and best-value ways to get a proper sauna and ice bath session on Koh Samui. For 380 THB you get a full day of unlimited use of an 80°C Finnish sauna, a herbal steam room and an ice bath that is topped up with fresh ice throughout the day, plus a towel, a locker and showers. There is no booking system and no time slot. You walk in at any point from 11am, pay at reception and stay as long as you like until closing at 9pm.
Vihara sits in a tropical garden in Lamai, on the south-east coast of the island, directly opposite Punch It Gym and tucked behind the Spa Garden Resort. The setting is a big part of the appeal: coconut palms, banana leaves, flowering plants and the green hills behind Lamai rise above a collection of open-air salas, loungers on the grass and cushioned rest areas under a bamboo roof. The venue describes itself as built for rest and recovery rather than a social scene, and the layout reflects that, with plenty of quiet corners to lie down between rounds.
What the Day Pass Includes
Every pass at Vihara includes unlimited use of the three core facilities, so the day pass is not a cut-down version of a membership. It covers:
- A traditional wood-lined Finnish sauna held at 80°C
- A fragrant herbal steam room directly beside the sauna
- An ice bath, refreshed with fresh ice through the day
- A small dipping pool in the garden for cooling off between rounds
- Towel, locker and shower access
The usual routine is heat, then cold, then rest, repeated as many times as feels right. Many guests pair the circuit with a training session at one of the Lamai gyms nearby, since the sanctuary is a few minutes from the main fight and fitness camps and stays open until 9pm.
Vihara is clear about what it does not have. There is no infrared sauna, no jacuzzi or hot tub, and the steam room is a herbal steam room rather than a Turkish hammam with a scrub service. If one of those is the main reason for your visit, it is worth knowing before you make the trip.
Multi-Visit Passes and Prices
For anyone staying on the island for more than a few days, Vihara sells multi-visit passes that bring the per-visit price down:
- Day pass: 380 THB, a full day of sauna, steam and ice bath, walk in from 11am
- Island pass: 1,500 THB for 5 visits within 14 days (one person)
- Sanctuary pass: 2,280 THB for 10 visits within 3 months, guests welcome with the pass holder
- Vihara pass: 4,000 THB for 20 visits within 6 months, guests welcome with the pass holder
Children under 12 visit free with an adult, which makes it an unusually easy option for families who want a calm afternoon.
Massage and Café
Massage is available in an open-air sala in the garden, either on its own or added to a day pass. You do not need to buy spa entry to book a treatment. The posted menu includes Thai massage (60 minutes, 500 THB), Thai oil massage (60 minutes, 600 THB), deep tissue (60 minutes, 650 THB), foot massage (60 minutes, 450 THB) and a 30-minute head and shoulder massage (300 THB). There are four massage beds in the sala, so couples and groups of up to four can be treated side by side.
Food and drink come from Deffi's Café, which serves smoothie bowls, poke bowls, wraps and plates alongside specialty coffee, teas and cacao. The café is open to everyone, so non-spa visitors can drop in too, and fruit-infused water is available all day for pass holders.
Location and Getting There
Vihara Sanctuary is in Lamai, Koh Samui, at the back of the Spa Garden Resort and directly across the road from Punch It Gym. The venue's own directions are simple: head for Punch It Gym, cross the road to the Spa Garden Resort entrance, then follow the garden path to the back, past the bamboo. The official website links to Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions. Lamai is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road from Chaweng and the airport, and taxis, songthaews and scooters all serve the area.
